Racism for Sale: BBC Africa Eye
In this 2022 investigation, BBC Africa Eye reporters Runako Celina and Henry Mhango trace the production and circulation of videos in which African children are made to perform messages in Chinese for online audiences. Beginning with a notorious clip in which children unknowingly repeat an explicitly racist phrase, the documentary follows the networks of production, exploitation and digital circulation behind this disturbing genre of content.
The documentary is particularly relevant to ongoing debates about race, representation and platform economies in China–Africa relations: not simply how Africans are represented in Chinese media, but how those representations are produced, monetised and circulated across borders.
